Quality management and cost of education at private universities in Bangladesh: An evaluation

An exploratory survey was conducted to analyze the consumers’ evaluation of private higher education sectors in Bangladesh with particular reference to the quality as well as the cost of education. The sample was taken on a random basis from about ten private universities in Dhaka metropolitan area. The respondents (students) were asked to evaluate the quality and the cost of education at private universities in Bangladesh. Respondents ranked the attributes on a number of itemized seven-point scale ratings bounded at each end by one of two bipolar adjectives. The result of this study shows that faculty credentials, academic calendar, campus facility, research facility and cost of education are associated with quality education and that the consumers feel most of the private universities in Bangladesh provide quality education at reasonable costs

Model kejayaan utama amalan terbaik pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan di Malaysia

Pendekatan penyenggaraan seringkali dianggap sebagai aktiviti yang remeh sehinggakan dalam praktis semasa, pendekatan ini tidak dapat menarik perhatian kebanyakkan golongan berpengetahuan dan berkemahiran. Senario ini memberikan justifikasi awal mengenai budaya semasa penyenggaraan yang tidak lagi diterapkan secara cekap dan berkesan. Sehubungan dengan itu matlamat kajian ini adalah untuk meneroka perspektif semasa amalan pengurusan warisan dalam industri pengekalan dan pemuliharaan bangunan warisan di Malaysia, mengenalpasti faktor yang mempengaruhi amalan semasa dan membentuk faktor kejayaan utama amalan terbaik pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan di Malaysia. Dalam mencapai matlamat tersebut, satu model penilaian amalan terbaik pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan telah dibangunkan menggunakan kaedah Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) berpandukan kepada elemen kriteria amalan terbaik. Model penilaian ini telah diuji di enam buah organisasi pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan. Hasil penemuan mendapati bahawa indikasi amalan semasa pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan di Malaysia telah dikategorikan sebagai lemah (59.05%). Kajian seterusnya adalah untuk mengenalpasti masalah yang menyumbang kepada kelemahan amalan semasa di mana maklumbalas dari 63 responden yang terdiri daripada ahli akademik dan profesional industri mendapati bahawa masalah kewangan, kekurangan institusi serta kemudahan latihan, masalah alat ganti dan sikap manusia sebagai faktor yang amat signifikan. Sebagai refleks kepada masalah yang telah dikenalpasti, model kejayaan utama amalan terbaik pengurusan penyenggaraan bangunan warisan telah direkabentuk bagi proses menambahbaik praktis amalan semasa. Kesimpulannya, model kejayaan utama yang dibentuk berpotensi membantu ke arah mengubah amalan semasa yang lemah kepada amalan yang lebih baik dan berkesan di masa hadapa

Public Transport Announcement Device For The Blind Using RFID- And ARM-Based Platform

This report presents the development of a public transport announcement device for the blind using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and ARM-based platform. The device functions to notify the blind person of the arrival and determining the identity of the bus using voice announcement. The device also constantly notifies the blind person of the next station ones the blind has departed the desired bus. The RFID tag chosen for this project is of active RFID type since the requirement is to detect a bus at a few tens of meter range. The RFID is based on nRF24L01+ transceiver module. This RFID operate at 2.4GHz frequency which is a free ISM band. Upon testing, the receiver was able to detect the ID transmitted up to 150feet in open air and direct line of sight condition. A programmer device which functions to program the RFID tag with a desired ID is also designed. The ARM-based Platform used is Freescale Freedom FRDM-KL25Z board which is based on 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ Core Processor. The RFID is interfaced with FRDM-KL25Z board via SPI communication. As for sound module, WTV020-SD MODULE is chosen and this module communicates with the FRDM-KL25Z board using virtual serial port created using digital I/O`s.

Subspecialization, a Cause of Concern for Neurosurgeons in Pakistan, an Opinion Piece and Open Discussion

Specialization is a process of becoming an expert. In medicine, it was a long and gruelling journey that medical graduates embarked upon in their chosen field with pride and enthusiasm to become leaders. The specialists seen as the culmination of years of hard work and the marker of prestige. In the old days this distinction was very apparent between the barber surgeons who had little to no formal education and trained as an apprentice and the physicians, who had a university education, went on to become fellows of one of the Royal Colleges and were treated as experts. Eventually, as knowledge expanded, 65 specialities fragmented from medicine and surgery and as of today 31 subspecialties are recognized by the general medical council in the UK.

Winning Public Hearts and Minds: Security and Development Aid in the 21st Century

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States, foreign aid has focused on winning public hearts and minds in the aid recipient states as a hedge against insecurity and means to achieve progress in the “war on terror.” Western donors, especially the United States, argue foreign aid is an effective tool to expand government capacity and control over territory, win public hearts and minds, and ultimately mitigate the need and significant military costs of deployment to counter insecurity, extremism, and terrorism in weak, fragile and failing states. This dissertation uses case studies to explore the unique relationship between foreign aid and winning public hearts and minds in the aid recipient countries of Afghanistan (2001-2017), Iraq (2003-2017), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995-2017), and Kosovo (1999-2017). This research uses data from surveys and public opinion polls conducted by reliable national and international organizations in the four cases under consideration in order to address two research questions. First, does foreign aid increase positive public attitudes toward the donor(s) of the foreign aid in an aid recipient country? Second, does foreign aid increase positive public attitudes toward the state in an aid recipient country? The research findings suggest foreign aid is not positively associated with an increase in positive public attitudes toward the donors and the aid recipient states and has fallen short of winning public hearts and minds in these four cases. These findings, however, do not suggest that foreign aid is not a viable tool in winning public hearts and minds toward the state, donors and the “war on terror” in the aid recipient states, but should be seen rather as an evaluation of the current state of knowledge, peace and state building measures and should guide scholarly debate and policy on exploring alternative approaches to state and peacebuilding outside the existing top-down approaches. Implications for policymakers and development practitioners are that state legitimacy, service delivery, winning post-conflict peace, and political corruption influence public positive and negative attitudes and winning public hearts and minds toward the state and donors in aid recipient states
